Durable, Hassle-Free Straw Anchoring in Any Soil Condition

Burchland Manufacturing’s SCX Straw Crimper design allows the soil to stay connected through the mobility of the machine’s discs and keep the straw crimped. It’s unlike ordinary crimpers; it’s a hassle-free process and a durable machine that will complete your job efficiently.

  • Spring loaded independent disc suspension smooths out any ground condition.
  • Heavy gauge tubular frame stands up to the toughest conditions.
  • Rock Guards prevent damage to bearing hubcaps.
  • Pivoting coulter assembly with heavy-duty, heat-treated, spring-loaded notched discs, prevents rocks from wedging between discs.
  • 8″ disc spacing is standard with other disc spacing available.

Installing erosion control blankets and matting, this material roller can save hundreds of hours of labor. This productivity tool can also be used for other rolled materials such as non-woven geotextiles, straw blankets and geo-grids.

Controlled from the cab, the boom on the material roller can swing 180 degrees to unroll from the right or left side of the skid steer. The boom can also be positioned straight out from the can to unload rolls directly from a trailer which allows the contractor to use larger rolls that could not be handled manually. This process saves users time and ultimately money because of its efficiency.

“Heavy built, reliable and a big part of our cost savings strategy.”

– Trever Brown | Drish Construction

It’s a good machine for small jobs that don’t have room to get a larger machine in. I like the quick setup and I think it’s a great value.

— Beau Perkins | Hawkeye Paving | Bettendorf, IA

How does the SCX handle rough terrain or debris?

Thanks to its pivoting discs and spring-loaded suspension, the SCX adapts to soil contours and avoids obstacles. Discs float over rocks and uneven ground, while rock guards prevent debris from being wedged in, ensuring uninterrupted performance .

What does “independent disc pivot” mean, and why is it important?

Thanks to its pivoting discs and spring-loaded suspension, the SCX adapts to soil contours and avoids obstacles. Discs float over rocks and uneven ground, while rock guards prevent debris from being wedged in, ensuring uninterrupted performance.

What disc spacing and working widths are available?

The SCX comes in 6 ft, 8 ft, and 10 ft widths, with standard disc spacing of 8″ (6″ spacing available too). Models feature 10–21 discs depending on width, allowing customization to your project’s scale and soil conditions.

Can the SCX create smooth, tight turns during operation?

Absolutely. The pivoting discs enable smoother, tighter turns compared to rigid shaft crimpers, boosting maneuverability and speed during installation.

Is maintenance easy? What are the wear parts?

The SCX incorporates rock guards and pivoting coulter assemblies to reduce damage. Wear items include spring-loaded discs and hubcaps, which are designed for straightforward replacement and support from Burchland’s parts network.

What benefits does the SCX offer over traditional single-shaft crimpers?

Unlike conventional crimpers that lift off completely when hitting obstacles, the SCX’s design ensures only the affected discs pivot away while others remain engaged. This maintains soil contact, uniform straw crimping, and uninterrupted operation.

The SCX Straw Crimper from Burchland Manufacturing is a high-performance solution for anchoring straw mulch into soil, ensuring consistent erosion protection across uneven terrain. Its standout feature is the independently pivoting, spring-loaded discs that move in multiple directions—left/right and up/down—keeping most discs engaged even when some float over rocks, roots, or stumps (burchlandmfg.com). This intelligent design prevents downtime, enabling smooth, tight-turn operations and continuous crimping where traditional shaft crimpers would disengage. Constructed with a heavy-duty tubular frame, heat-treated notched discs, and protective rock guards, the SCX is built for durability—withstanding harsh conditions including wind and rain (burchlandmfg.com). Available in 6′, 8′, and 10′ widths with varied disc spacing options, it delivers adaptable performance across job sites.

Paired with Burchland’s full suite of erosion-control tools—like the EZR Material Roller, BR2 Blanket Roller, and XTS Silt Fence Installer—the SCX completes a powerful lineup designed to simplify land management and boost efficiency.
